Moana is an upcoming 2026 live-action fantasy musical film directed by Thomas Kail from a script by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. Produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, Seven Bucks Productions and Flynn Picture Co., it is an adaptation of the 2016 animated film of the same name[1], and stars Catherine Laga'aia and Dwayne Johnson, with John Tui, Frankie Adams and Rena Owen in supporting roles.[2] The film will be distributed by Walt Disney Pictures and is scheduled to be released theatrically on July 10, 2026.[3]
Plot[]
It follows the adventurous teen Moana who takes to the seas to save her people on a journey that brings her into contact with the cocky demi-god Maui and helps her uncover her own identity. With his guidance, she braves monsters and treacherous seas to become a master way-finder all her own.[4]

Development[]
On April 3, 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger and Dwayne Johnson shared the news during Disney’s annual shareholder’s meeting Monday, that a live-action remake of the 2016 animated film, Moana, would be in development with Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie, returning for the remake. Johnson is set to act as a producer for the film, via his production company, Seven Bucks Productions. His co-star in the 2016 animated film, Auli'i Cravalho, who voiced the titular character, will executive produce with Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co.[1] On May 31, 2023, Thomas Kail was announced to be the film's director.[5] It was reported on April 5, 2024 that the film had been pushed back from its original date of June 27, 2025 to July 10, 2026.[3][6]

In April 2023, Dwayne Johnson revealed he was set to reprise his role of Maui in the live-action remake.[1] In June 2024, Disney announced that Catherine Laga'aia, John Tui, Frankie Adams and Rena Owen joined the cast.[2][7]
