The Cave of the Ancestors is a secret cave located on Motunui. It serves as a location where all the canoes were stored after Maui stole the Heart of Te Fiti which caused the darkness to spread through to island after island and also caused sea monsters to attack any voyagers. This caused the ancient chiefs to forbid voyaging and put the canoes in the cave and sealed it, making sure no one find out the truth, with only a few people on Motunui knowing about the secret cave. However a thousand years later, a girl named Moana learns about the caves and takes one of the canoes to find Maui and restore the Heart. After she successfully restores the heart, Motunui un-forbids the voyaging heritage.

When Matai Vasa and the villagers discovered Motunui, they made it their new home and start to voyage across the ocean. However Maui steals the Heart of Te Fiti, causing darkness to spread to island after island and sea monsters killing voyagers. The ancient chiefs decided to forbid voyaging and placed all of the canoes in a secret cave and sealed it to make sure no villager on Motunui finds out about the cave and the canoes with only a few people knowing about the cave. However a thousand years later, a girl named Moana, born with the love of voyaging and the ocean, is taken to the place by her Grandmother, Tala, who reveals the truth and that they were voyagers, but after Maui stole the heart, they forbid voyaging causing to forget who they are. She also gives her the heart and tells her to find Maui. Moana barges in during a tribal meeting telling everyone about the cave and finding Maui and restoring heart. However this infuriates her father, Tui, proving that he also knows about the cave and thinking that Moana wouldn’t be able to find it. This causes him to get a torch and making his way to the cave to burn the boats, despite his daughter’s rejections. However after they were informed about Tala falling ill and dying, Tala tells Moana following the fish hook to find Maui and restore the heart. Moana takes a canoe with her and begins her journey, not knowing that a stowaway was on the canoe with her. After she restores the heart and becomes a wayfinder, she returns to her island where she reunites with her parents and the villagers and Pua and they brought back their voyaging ways and pulls the canoes out of the secret cave.
